Umar (may Allah be well pleased with him) once said to the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace):

“O Messenger of Allah, you are dearer to me than anybody else in the world except my own self.”

He (s) replied Nobody can be a perfect Muslim until I am dearer to him than even his own self.”

Umar (Ra) said: “Now you are dearer to me than my own self.”

The Prophet (s) replied: “Now, O Umar.”!!!

The Scholars have given two meanings to the concluding words of the Prophet (s) viz:

(i)   “Now, you have the real emaan.”

(ii)   “Why is it that it is only now that I am dearer to you than your own self? This should have been so long ago.”

Love for the Prophet Muhammad is a measure of one's iman (confidence and inward conviction) and our iman is finished and idealized just when our adoration for the Prophet surpasses our affection for everything else in this world, including our own lives. The Holy Qur'an says:The Prophet is ideal for the adherents even to their own particular selves
