Shirk and the veneration of Graves

During the early era of Islam visiting graves was prohibited. The reason behind this prohibition was that Shirk originated among the previous nations with the veneration of righteous people and their graves.[1]To avoid confusion and misguidance visiting graves was only made permissible when the Sahabah (radhi allahu anhu) thoroughly understood the Islamic concept of Tawheed (Allah’s Oneness). Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) said: “I used to forbid you from visiting graves, but now you should visit them, for surely they are reminders of the next life.”[2] – So whoever wishes to visit may do so, but don’t say anything false.”[3]

[1]When Umm Habiba and Umm Salamah (radhi allahu anhuma) mentioned a church in Ethiopia that had pictures, Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) said: “If any religious man dies among these people they would build a place of worship at his grave and make these pictures on it. They will be the worst creature with Allah on the Day of Resurrection.” [Saheeh al-Bukharee (Eng. Trans.), vol.1, p.251, no.419, Saheeh Muslim (Eng. Trans.). vol.1, p.268, no.1076), Sunan an-Nasa’ee (al-Masaajid) vol. 1, no. 115, and Musnad Imaam Ahmad vol. 6, no. 51.]

[2]Saheeh Muslim (Eng. Trans.) vol.2, p.463-464, no.2131, Sunan Abu Dawood (Eng. Trans.) vol.2, p.919, no.3229, Sunan an-Nas’ee, Musnad Ahmad Ibn Hambal and al-Baihaqee.

[3]This addition is found in an-Nasa’ee’s narration. See Saheeh Sunan an-Nasa’ee, vol. 2, p.436, no. 1922.

Janaab Altaf Sultani saheb,
Kindly confirm if you are against those people who visits the Graves of Awliyas and Prophets alaihisalaam and ask them to pray for us or are you one of the followers of the same so that we can discuss this matter further with ease insha Allah.
Also if possible please post the hadees sharif which you have quoted, in arabic so that we can understand things better.
Regards,
Mushfique....

he hadith posted by Altaf Sultani are authentic Hadiths with refrences provided therein, this is enough 4 us to understand the meaning of hadith. It is not at all necessary to post the respective hadiths in Arabic, as we can read the translation of the respective hadith in English.

Is this not potraing the idea of Wahaabi, ahle hadees people. They use these hadees sharifs against us to proove that we are like the Ethiopians. Kindly clarify.
Regards.

mushfique bhai...

visiting grave was prohibited and then was allowed....this is wat we learn from the above hadith.....wahabies  and ahle hadith only consider the former hadith and reject the later....

similarly they place many accusation on us....but they fail to undstand that in the above hadith Prophet sallallahu alaih wasallam is addressing to people who use to worship grave and draw pictures around....we dont worship grave and draw pictures.....do we?

Imam Shafi (Rehmat'Ullah Alaih)

He describes his own experience about the blessings of the tomb of Imam Abū Hanīfah: I derive blessing from the person of Imam Abū Hanīfah and I visit his grave everyday. When I face a problem, I offer two optional cycles of prayer and visit his grave and (while standing) I pray to Allah to solve my problem. And I have not even left the place that my problem is solved.

Khatīb Baghdādī has related the incident with a sound chain of transmission in his Tārīkh Baghdād (1:123)

Ibn Hajar Haythamī, al-Khayrāt-ul-hisān fī manāqib-il-imām al-a‘zam Abū Hanīfah (p.94)

Muhammad Zāhid Kawtharī, Maqālāt (p.381)

Ibn ‘Ābidīn Shāmī in Radd-ul-muhtār ‘alā Durr-il-mukhtār (1:41).

Hujjat ul Islam Imam Al-Ghazzali (Rehmatuallah aliye)

Translation: Imam Ghazzali (Rehmat'Ullah Alaih) said that whenever anyone is in some difficulty then he should ask the people of tombs for help, who are of (sacred) souls but have passed away (i.e. transferred into another dimension). There is no doubt in it that any person visiting (their tombs) gets spiritual help plus benefit from them and many times when their Waseela is presented in the court of Allah, the difficulties are removed
