Sayyiduna Umar Farouk (radi Allahu anhu) sent troops towards Kasra and he made Sayyiduna Sa'ad bin Ka'ab Waqqas (radi Allahu anhu) the commander of the troop. Sayyiduna Khalid bin Walid (radi Allahu anhu) was the chief commanding officer. When they came close to the Dajla, there were no ships or boats to cross the river. Sayyiduna Khalid bin Walid (radi Allahu anhu) and Hadrat Sa'ad bin Ka'ab (radi Allahu anhu) went forward and spoke to the river, saying: "O River! You are flowing through the Command of Almighty Allah. Thus, we are giving you the Wasila of the justice of Rasool (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) and the Khalifa of Rasool (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam), Sayyiduna Umar Farouk (radi Allahu anhu). Do not become a stoppage between us and our crossing." Suddenly, the river gave way. Then the troops crossed the river with their horses and camels. They reached the other side of the land in such a manner that their (horses and camels) hooves did not even get wet.

In the above narrations one sees that the Sahaba-Ikraam used various forms of mediation as solutions to their problems.

Sayyiduna Sheikh Abdul Haq Muhaddith Delhwi (alaihir rahmah) writes the following: "According to the Ijma of the Ulema, to use the Wasila of the Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) to gain assistance both with verbally or physically is said to be confirmed to be desirable."

KALAAM E RAZA

Kis ke jalway ki jhalak hai, yeh ujaala kya hai
Har taraf ka hairatzada takta kya hai

Whose radiance is this flashing? what is this light?
In all directions, what does the starry-eyed person see?
[ie. at the wondrous Rawda mubaarak of Rasool Allah sal Allahu alayhiwa sallam!]

Maang man maanti, munh maangi muraadein lay ga

Ask! and you shall receive all your heart's desire
there is neither a 'no' here, nor a 'what is it?'
[ie at the Beloved Master's gate you receive without any questions asked! Subhan Allah!

zehr-e-'asyaan mein sitamgar tujhe meeTha kya hai

Advice is hard to bear O adviser, don't be fearful o ego
in sins' poison o cruel one, what tastes sweet to thee?

Hum hain unkay, woh hain Tere, to huwe hum Tere
Is se baDh kar teri simt aur waseela kya hai!

We are his (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam),he is Thine, therefore we are Thine (O Allah!)
Greater than this, what intermediary and link is there to Thee?

Here is the  "SAHIH"  hadith to establish that Sahaba took the waseela of Prophet (Peace n blessings be  upon him) even after his passing away

Translation: Imam
Tabrani has narrated an incident that a person repeatedly visited Uthman bin Affan (ra) concerning something he needed but Uthman paid no attention to him. The man went to Uthman bin Hunaif (ra) and complained to him about the matter- [Note: this was after the death of the Prophet and after the caliphates of Abu Bakr and Umar ] so Uthman bin Hunaif said : “Go to the place of Wudu, then come to the Masjid, perform two Rak'ats and then say : “O Allah!, I ask you and turn to you through our Prophet Muhammad, the Prophet of Mercy. O Muhammad! I turn through you to my lord, that He fulfil my need” and mention your need. Then
come so that I can go with you [to the caliph Uthman] So the man left and did as he had been told, then went to the door of Uthman ibn Affan
(Allah be pleased with him), and the doorman came, took him by the hand, brought him to Uthman ibn Affan, and seated him next to him on a
cushion. 'Uthman asked, "What do you need?" and the man mentioned what he wanted, and Uthman accomplished it for him ...(till the end of hadith)

References: Imam al-Mundhiri (rahmatullahi alaih) said: Imam Tabarani after narrating it said "THIS HADITH IS SAHIH" [At-Targheeb wa Tarheeb, Page No. 129 in the chapter of Salaat al Hajah]

Note: Imam  al-Haythami (rahmatullahi alaih) also accepted the authentication of Imam Tabrani in  his Majma az Zawaid Volume No. 2, Hadith # 3668, even Ibn Taymiyyah declared it "SAHIH" in his Qa'ida al Jaleela fit Tawassul wal Waseela (Page No. 156)

Imam Muhammad bin Yusuf al-Salihi (rahmatullahi alaih) has actually put the final nail  in coffin of Munkareen by setting a whole chapter on this issue:

Translation: Chapter 5: Regarding Tawassul through the Prophet (Peace n blessings be upon him) "AFTER HIS DEATH". It is narrated by At-Tabrani and al-Bayhaqi "WITH CONTINUOUS CHAIN (بإسناد متصل ) HAVING THIQA NARRATORS" the hadith of Uthman bin Hunaif (radiAllahu anhu) that a man came to Uthman bin Affan
(radiAllahu anhu) regarding his Hajah .. until the end of same hadith [Muhammad bin Yusuf al-Salihi in Sabl al Hadi, Volume No.12, Page No. 407]

Verdict # 1 (From Shah Abdul Aziz Muhadith dhelvi who was author of a great book called "Tuhfa Athna Ashriyyah")
.

Translation: One says: ‘Oh Allah! For the sake of this person whom you have bestowed your mercy, ease my hardship, or one says like this

"O ALLAH'S SERVANT AND HIS FRIEND" do intercession in my regard, ask for my need in the court of Allah so that He fulfills it, we should know that the man in-between is nothing but an intercessor, whereas the Qadir, the granter and Mawsul is Allah (alone), and in this way there is no possibility of it being shirk at all, "THE REJECTER OF THIS FOLLOWS ONLY HIS WHIMS, OBVIOUSLY IT IS ALLOWED WITHOUT DISPUTE" that Wasila could be sought from Saliheen and friends of Allah when they are alive and that they should be asked to make dua, THEN WHY would it be prohibited that they should be asked for help "AFTER THEIR PASSING AWAY"

(Note: Before this, Shah Abdul Aziz had shown Hujjat ul Islam, Imam al- Ghazzali - Rahimuhullah's verdict that one who is asked for help in life is also asked for help after his death). The arwah of Kamileen (truly sincere ones) do not have a difference due to life and death except for the fact that "AFTER DEATH THEIR ARWAH BECOME MORE STRONGER" in Sharah of Mishkaat (by Mullah Ali Qari) and Sharah us Saudoor by Imam Jalal ud-din as-Suyuti this has been explained in detail and in these books the ahadith have been mentioned with multiple chains in this regard
